Building the Hants County Artists and Artisans Community

In Hants County (including all of our towns and villages) we have a vibrant community of artisans, both professional and amateur. There are studios, galleries, classes, shows, festivals and other events throughout the year. But could we do even more? As an artist, artisan, or art lover, do you feel like a part of the arts community or are you looking for more opportunities to exhibit your work, improve on your skill base through classes and workshops, network with fellow artists, develop your portfolio or market yourself as an artist?

Paint Avondale

Sunday, September 4, 2016
Avondale, Hants Co.

This September the Hants County Arts Council and Avon River Heritage Society are once again playing host to Paint Avondale, a spirited open air painting event, which takes place throughout the historic communities of Avondale and Newport Landing. Sunday, Sept. 4th from 12 till 4.

A part of our successful Artisans in Action series, this event is sure to bring many people out to interact with our local artists while exploring our community. To make things even more interesting for artists and visitors, this year we are offering even more locations for artists to create!

All locations will be near the museum, with views of the community with its many 18th century homes or the beautiful Avon River.

For the duration of event the Avon Spirit Shipyard will be converted into a pop-up gallery where participating artists can display and sell their work. The boat house will also serve as our home base for the day, here maps and artist information will be available for visitors. A volunteer will be on hand to process sales, with 100% of proceeds going back to the artists.

The fee to participate is $20 per artist. Artists are asked to please book a spot and forward us their bio or a brief write-up prior to July 31st. Only those registered before August will be included in our promotional material.

Now in it's 4th year, our Artisans in Action series is building up quite the momentum and each of this summer's events have been very well attended. We expect that Paint Avondale will be no different.

Interested artists can contact us by email at or telephone (902) 757-1718.

Artisans in Action

Sunday, June 7, 2015 to Sunday, October 4, 2015
Newport Landing

This summer we are happy to once again present Artisans in Action, taking place at the Avon River Heritage Museum and Avon Spirit Shipyard in Newport Landing, nestled along the scenic shores of the Avon River.

Located on the site where Planter sloops, The Lydia and Sally, landed in 1760, the Avon River area became one of the great square-rigged wooden shipbuilding centers in Nova Scotia in the 19th Century. Where the the Avon Spirit Shipyard now sits was the location of the Harvie and Mosher shipyards. Between them, they built and launched 165 sailing ships during the “Golden Age of Sail”. Artisans in Action aims to celebrate the hardworking creative people of past and present whose work shapes our culture.

This interactive series provides an opportunity for Nova Scotian artists and artisans who focus on historical trades, crafts, and art forms done in both traditional and contemporary manners to share their skills with a wider audience. This craft centered group of events is an opportunity for artists to present informative and engaging demonstrations of their craft, while offering their products for sale.

Artisans in Action takes place the first Sunday of the month, June – October, Noon until 4pm.

Our first event in the series is devoted to Wood, Leather and Stone and will take place June 7th at the museum.

We are currently accepting artists for this year's series, thanks to the ArtsVest program and support from the Bread Gallery, we are able to lower the entry fee for this year’s series to $20 per person/per event.
There is a limit of 3 artists per medium, so please contact us ASAP to book your spot.

This event is being heavily promoted locally with listings in our Arts Digest, the NSDCC's annual events booklet and newspaper ads being placed in the week leading up to the event.
